Idea
In the seaside town of Southbridge, a struggling family-run funeral care business blames medicine advancements as the reason that people are not dying as much anymore. However, the reality is far more simple, as the dysfunctional dynamics within the funeral home make potential clients avoid them.
The owner and director, Scott Cesar, an amateur filmmaker, takes his role too literally, often finding himself treating funerals like film sets. Frustrated by the lack of drama, he attempts to direct mourners as if they were actors and employees as crew. His son, Reuben, works as both the embalmer and mortuary cosmetologist, skills learned from his late mother. Unbeknownst to Scott, Reuben secretly dreams of becoming a professional fashion make-up artist in London, and he uses the morgue corpses for his impressive portfolio.
The logistics are managed by Leticia, the funeral hearse driver with dreams of becoming the first female F1 driver. Fueled by her obsession with Fast and Furious, she views driving a dead person in the boot as her adrenaline fix. And finally there’s Otis, both receptionist and crematory operator, who has an unusual passion for fire. Constantly advocating for cremation, he subtly tries to convince grieving families that it's the ideal option.
As the funeral home struggles to stay afloat, the eccentricities of its workers and personal challenges will get mixed up with their day to day work. Our characters will have to battle between following their dreams or having a clear path written for them to follow. This is a dark comedy that explores grief, family expectations and the bizarre world of the funeral care industry in a small coastal town.
The season will come to an end when Reuben is faced with a choice: to pursue the job of his dreams as a makeup artist at a prestigious event in London or to remain behind and take over the family business following the unexpected passing of his father, Scott.
